Birthdays mean different things to different people. I know some who celebrate all that they are for an entire month to people who pretend that it is just another day with no significance.

I fall somewhere in the middle.

I like to take my birthday as a time to reflect on the year past and my life overall. It is a time to stop and gut check where I am versus where I thought I would be. More importantly, it is a moment to think about who I want to be and what I want my life to look like in the year to come.

The one thing that I am trying to incorporate more into my life is to celebrate the here and now. Not to wait for some grand affair or accomplishment, but to use the wins that happen throughout the day, week or month to pop open a good bottle of wine or treat myself to a nicer dinner than the norm.

A few years ago a fellow writer, Jacq Fisch wrote about drinking the good wine in her book, Unfussy Life. In the story, she talks about how we save the good things (like a nice bottle of wine) for some time in the future that might be more deserving.

This always makes me think about how often I don’t wear the cute dress or outfit because I am saving it. For what, I don’t know. Or, not using certain dishes because they are more delicate. I always think about growing up and knowing there was fine china in the house, but we never ever seemed to eat off of it. Too much fear of breaking it or too much trouble to clean it all?

Gets me thinking. Why do we have nice things if there is never an occasion special enough to actually use them? Wouldn’t life be more fun to say this day is worthy of a cuter outfit? Or, today was a success because I achieved a milestone on the way to a goal. The good wine is on the menu.

Seriously. What exactly am I waiting for?

The pandemic has taught us that tomorrow is not necessarily guaranteed.

So if there is one thing I intend to do more of in this next year of life it is to stop waiting for the right time to celebrate. Every day can be celebrated for something. It is simply up to me to decide I am worthy enough. The win is worthy enough.

And the year ahead is going to be exciting and there will be plenty worthy enough to celebrate.
